    I was trying to get my wife’s new HP printer set up and used the web address that came in the box. It turned out to be a fake HP site, made to look official with HP colors and initials. There was a chat box, and when I asked for help finishing the installation, I was told a technician would call. A man named *** called and said he worked for the Missouri office of Worldwide IT Services, supposedly used by HP for technical troubleshooting. He asked to access my computer, and I agreed. He then pointed out a bunch of files he claimed were junk, including what he said were Trojan horses or malware. According to him, the software couldn’t be downloaded unless the computer was protected first, and he showed me three protection plans starting at $799 for three years. I refused, since I’ve used Mac computers for years without anything like that. Later I found out the story was full of lies. The software downloaded just fine, so there was never any protection issue. HP does not use third parties to set up software, and definitely not to sell protection in order to “unlock” computers. Gemini AI also indicated the files he showed were normal files, and when I ran a scan, the computer came back clean. I thought I’d been taken by a scammer from Asia, only to be shocked when I learned the company’s office is actually in Pennsylvania.
