Our editorial mission
RealReviews.io publishes consumer reviews of businesses to help people make better-informed purchasing decisions. We give every consumer an open platform to share an honest experience, and we give every business the same right to respond. Our editorial role is to keep that exchange useful, accurate, and free of manipulation — not to decide whether a business is "good" or "bad." We publish reviews; readers decide.
How reviews are collected
The vast majority of reviews on RealReviews.io are submitted directly by consumers who choose to write about a business they have used. Anyone can write a review without being invited, and reviewers are not paid by RealReviews.io for their submissions. A review may be submitted in any of the 12 languages our interface supports. By submitting a review, the reviewer agrees to our Terms of Service.
Businesses that subscribe to our paid plans can also send Review Invitations to their own customers — for example, after a completed purchase. Reviews submitted through an invitation are clearly tracked as invited in our internal systems, but they are subject to exactly the same editorial standards, automated checks, and removal rules as any other review. A business cannot pre-screen, edit, or selectively suppress invited reviews before publication.
AI evaluation methodology
Current methodology effective May 19, 2026.
Reviews on RealReviews.io are evaluated by a combination of automated systems and human moderators. The following pipeline stages are AI-assisted:
- Submission screening — every review is checked against language, length, and formatting rules before it is queued for publication.
- Fake-review detection — automated signals look for patterns associated with coordinated reviewing, repeated content, suspicious account behavior, and other indicators of manipulation.
- Sentiment classification — used to flag reviews whose tone is inconsistent with the star rating, which may indicate a mis-clicked rating or coercion.
- Language detection — used to route reviews to the correct localized page and to surface content in the reader's language.
- Content compliance — automated checks for banned content categories listed below.
The following stages typically involve human review:
- Final moderation decisions on any review that has been formally flagged, disputed, or appealed under our Feedback & Complaints Policy.
- Escalation handling for reports of illegal content.
- Review of edge cases that automated systems mark as low-confidence.
Where a review is formally disputed or appealed, a human moderator reviews the case before any permanent action is confirmed. Routine, undisputed automated actions — for example, spam filtering at intake, or removal of duplicate submissions — may be handled end-to-end by our automated systems without separate human sign-off.
Plain-English summary of what our AI can and cannot determine: our automated systems are good at catching duplicate or near-duplicate text, accounts that behave in coordinated ways, and content that contains clear policy violations. They are not good at judging whether a specific personal experience is "true" — that is why human moderators handle disputes, and why we publish a wide range of opinions, including critical ones, as long as the reviewer is describing their own experience honestly. We do not pretend that AI can detect every coordinated fake-review campaign; we rely on a combination of automated signals, user reports, and business reports.
Despite our best efforts, no review platform — including RealReviews.io — can guarantee that every fraudulent, manipulated, or coordinated submission will be detected, or that every legitimate submission will be preserved. Both our automated systems and our human moderators can make mistakes in either direction. Moderation outcomes represent our reasonable judgment at the time and should not be relied on as a guarantee of any individual business's quality, conduct, or trustworthiness.
What gets rejected
We reject or remove reviews that fall into any of the following categories:
- Illegal content under the laws of the reviewer's country or the United States.
- Hate speech, slurs, or content that targets a person or group based on protected characteristics.
- Personal information about other people (doxxing), including phone numbers, home addresses, or non-public identifiers.
- Threats of violence or harassment.
- Undisclosed paid reviews, reviews submitted in exchange for compensation, and reviews submitted by anyone with an undisclosed material interest in the business being reviewed.
- Reviews that are off-topic for the business being reviewed (e.g. a complaint about a different company).
- Duplicate submissions from the same reviewer about the same transaction.
- Content that is profanity-only and contains no substantive description of an experience.
- Spam, advertising for unrelated products, and reviews that consist entirely of links.
Verification of authenticity
RealReviews.io does not require every reviewer to upload proof of purchase before a review is published. Requiring proof would exclude legitimate experiences that consumers cannot easily document — for example, a negative experience with a service where the consumer never completed a transaction.
We do accept and act on evidence when a business or another reviewer challenges a review's authenticity. Evidence we consider includes order numbers, transaction IDs, dated correspondence, photographs of products or receipts, and platform-side records when a business uses our Review Invitations. The party making the claim — for example, a business arguing that a reviewer was never a customer — is responsible for providing the evidence. We do not remove a review simply because a business says the reviewer is unknown to them; we require something a moderator can actually weigh.
Corrections and disputes
A reviewer can edit or delete their own review at any time from their account. If a business believes a review is inaccurate, the business can publicly respond to the review and can also formally flag the review for our moderators. The full process for flagging, including timelines and possible outcomes, is described in our Feedback & Complaints Policy. Appeals against moderation decisions are also handled there.
Conflict of interest
Paying business customers receive no editorial preference on RealReviews.io. Reviews about a paying customer are subject to the same editorial standards, AI evaluation, and human moderation as reviews about any other business. A business cannot remove or hide a negative review by paying us. The same independence applies to our advertising and affiliate relationships: banner placements and affiliate commissions on outbound brand links do not influence ratings or moderation, and any sponsored blog content is clearly labeled. For a full description of how RealReviews.io is funded and how that funding is kept separate from editorial decisions, see our Ownership & Funding page.
How this policy is updated
We review this Editorial Policy periodically and whenever a significant change to our review pipeline or moderation process is rolled out. Material changes are dated at the top of this page. We aim to note substantive changes in the body of the policy rather than silently editing it, but we may make minor clarifying edits without separate notice. The current version of this policy is the version published on this page; archived versions are not maintained.
