I recently traveled abroad from Sydney to Yokohama

I recently traveled abroad from Sydney to Yokohama, Japan. The service worked well in every country, including Hong Kong and Taiwan. I especially liked how the service switched automatically. I mainly used the Internet, and it worked very well. I didn't use the phone service much, but it worked okay when I received a call on the cruise ship. I recommend trying this service, as I've had it for two years.

I waited before writin' a more detailed review.

I waited before writin' a more detailed review. I've been with Fonus for my fourth bill for the 20Gb plan US$29.99 (C$47 on visa with exchange). First, I asked lotsa questions before signin' up. I was so sceptical at first 'n was a lil afraid of losin' my old number if portin' didn’t go right. I bought an eSIM plan. Customer service was great. Fido ported my number within a couple of hours but my phone wasn't set up correctly so I went on WhatsApp 'n they answered fairly quickly. It worked perfectly. It takes some gettin' used to. Like android phones can’t use the message app (green) but instead you gotta go into your Fonus app to see those. Also, you gotta initiate your iMessages with the person’s email instead of their cell number if that’s how you initially started iMessage with that contact. When makin' a call, need to use the Fonus app. Or sometimes you can hold the number of the contact down 'n scroll down to select to dial from Fonus if this makes any sense. Rogers is only 4G so I went into Cellular settings 'n selected Bell or Telus only which is 5G. I was in Poland, Austria 'n Croatia last month. I had no issues findin' a connection 'n upon landin', it would just connect on its own. No need to buy eSIM cards anymore! If you travel a lot, this is a great deal. You do have to be a lil tech savvy to switch over as there are a few nuances. I can see how someone could be annoyed or get frustrated but once you get it up and runnin', it’s a great plan.

Thanks Fonus for giving such a good service at a fair price.

Thanks Fonus for giving such a good service at a fair price. It was really simple to set up and the chance to move my number to you (finished in just a few days) was perfect for switching from Skype, since they ended their service. Having an eSim is very handy. When I go overseas, I don’t have to stress about roaming because of the data plan from Fonus. Your chat support is great as well. I hope one day you think about making a desktop app for Fonus too, but I’m very happy with your Mobile App.

I’ve been using Fonus for over two months now

I’ve been using Fonus for over two months now, and everything is going smooth. I live in Abbotsford, BC, and use a V1 SIM on the Rogers network with no problems, even on Chilliwack Mountain, where I often visit for my home construction business. As a builder, I need to stay in touch with subcontractors and different trade teams, plus handle tons of emails while on the move. With Fonus, during my free time, I can watch movies and use social media without worrying about speed or running out of data.

I’ve been using Fonus Mobile for nearly 11 months.

I’ve been using Fonus Mobile for nearly 11 months. Not once have I had a dropped call or missed a text (sms). It works well overseas, just like in the USA, and even in some places, it's better. Support is easy to reach, and their response time is really good. The one area they could improve is with "Group Texts." The Group Texts in the Fonus app are a bit confusing at first, so it takes time to get used to. Other than that, a great company.

Everything about the company, from their service to what

Everything about the company, from their service to what they offer, was really great. The best part is their customer support, which helped me move my number from another provider in just one day. They even gave me a refund twice because of my own error. Their service goes beyond limits — I can call anyone worldwide, unlike other providers that ask for local address, residence, or another local number to join. Big love to fonus ❤️

I've been with Fonus Mobile for about 11 months. I haven't experienced any dropped calls or missing texts. It works well abroad, as well as in the USA, and sometimes even better in certain countries. Support is available whenever needed, and they respond quickly. The only hiccup is with group texts in the Fonus app, which can be confusing at first. Apart from that, a great company overall.

Happy to find an MVNO in Canada

Happy to find an MVNO in Canada (even if it’s not based here?). Prices are lower for no contract data compared to the big telecoms, even after taxes. Subscription plan: World Unlimited Starter (with eSIM). Great support from chat service (thanks Sophie) who cleared up a signup issue (eSIM vs. SIM). eSIM works fine with Pixel 6a. No complaints so far.

I received quick help from Fonus to activate my Hot Spot.

I received quick help from Fonus to activate my Hot Spot. I must say that since they teamed up with KPNL, the service has improved a lot. No dropped calls, no need to redial, and the clarity is great. All of this, plus better pricing. You’re doing really good now…. It’s a real winner, everyone!!! Keep up the great work.

Been using Fonus for a few years now. Good service for a good price. I use it in Canada for my data, but it’s really usefull when traveling since it works in over 100 countries!! They always try to make the service better for users. The new V5 sim just came out and has been working well so far.

    Great service!

Great service! I have a Canadian number and work abroad. Now, I don't need local SIM cards while traveling because I can use data and stay connected anywhere. Only thing I would like is if their app worked with Android Auto for making calls, that's the only small problem I've had with FONUS.

The updated version is really good. I wonder if we were meant to get a credit when the new billing came into play, or maybe I misunderstood? Keep up with the improvements. Best regards.

Great value for your money and really convenient.

Great value for your money and really convenient. You get up to 20 GB of data, then it slows down, and you also get unlimited worldwide calls and roaming. That's definitely worth it. Customer service is usually good and super fast. The only real issue is that it says "unlimited data," but once you hit around 35 GB, they warn you they might shut off your service because of the "fair use" policy. So, it’s not truly unlimited data, which is a bit misleading. This has happened to me twice, and once, my service even got completely shut off. The old app was horrible and super glitchy. The new app is much better, although sometimes texts don’t show up even after a notification, and the only way to see them is to keep opening and closing the app window. The old app was awful—calls dropped, messages didn’t send or receive, and more. Luckily, the new app works pretty smoothly. Overall, good service.

Overall, Fonus has been a decent option for our Canadian

Overall, Fonus has been a decent option for our Canadian phone number during global travels. It's been handy for calls, data, and SMS over the last couple of years. Recently, we've encountered an issue where some numbers don't dial or get answered properly. This mostly happens with corporate automated systems in Nova Scotia. For example, calling Canadian Tire at 902-457-1001, the system should give you department choices. But two months ago, it rang 10 times before showing a "network error." Now, it just goes to a voicemail without any identification, making it unclear if it's Canadian Tire's voicemail or a network one. Fonus support mentioned they've reported it to their tech team and will get back to us once it's fixed. You can find more details on this in our phone article on yesRetired site.

When I first started using Fonus

When I first started using Fonus, I encountered a few quirks during the setup process. However, these were quickly resolved with the help of their 24/7 online support. I found that making calls to both US and European numbers from Canada was easy and I didn't experience any dropped calls. This is a pleasant change, especially considering the high prices charged by Canadian telecom companies. I haven't had the chance to evaluate the service while traveling in Europe yet. Unfortunately, I've had trouble connecting my phone to my vehicle. While it can receive calls, it won't dial them. As for all the people complaining, I think they're just a bunch of whiners.

Overall, I am happy with the service

Overall, I am happy with the service and especially the cost. There are a couple of drawbacks: numerous places (like banks) won't send verification texts to VOIP numbers, which is a major downside for me. The 'updated' App doesn't handle group messaging well. You can message several contacts, but responses are handled individually. the 'seamless' carrier transition is inconsistent when moving between Canada and the U.S.

Since switching to the new sim cards

Since switching to the new sim cards, the service has gotten much better. The connections are stable and I haven’t had any dropped calls. However, there are still some small issues with adding and removing contacts. One thing that still happens is that I have to turn off WiFi to make an outgoing call, though I’m not sure if this happens with all phones.

    Messaging worked well.

Messaging worked well. I had a problem with unnecessarily large photos, but the internet worked excellently with fast download speeds. However, there is a minimal delay when playing online games. Phone calls worked much better after I installed the codec that Roger's used with its VoIP service.
