Living in New Zealand, buying things from overseas
Living in New Zealand, buying things from overseas can be a worry, especially since it's so far away and sending things back can be a hassle. Summit Racing got my Alternator to me fast, and of course, having it shipped to our family business in New Zealand helped. I read some reviews where customers lost their items when they were sent to a private address.
Online, the item was listed as fitting my 1960 Buick Electra 225. I knew the right-hand drive might cause issues with the battery and generator light wires being in the wrong place. But that wasn't the biggest problem. I needed the alternator disguised as a generator, which Summit Racing supplies, but it had to fit. The measurements seemed correct online, but it was too long and too wide to fit in the original mounting brackets, and it rubbed on the bracket. Also, the Electra 225 has a double pulley on the alternator shaft because it has two belts.
If I lived in the US, I would have returned it. Luckily, a local engineer was able to make modifications to get it to fit. The alternator is working well now, and I’m happy with it. I had actually bought an aftermarket FVP 9005 generator from Rock Auto to replace my old one that lasted over 60 years, but that FVP only lasted 7 months. I’m much more confident the Powermaster 82051 will last a lot longer. I bought my B60 in 1980 when I was 18, and I’m not planning to sell it, so I’ll be surprised if this alternator doesn’t last me the rest of my life.
Thanks Summit for sending me a good quality alternator. If I had known they also have the shorter generator case part PWM 82111, I’m sure it would have fit straight in.
