We don’t usually cruise, but we had to because of my husband's worsening mobility. We've spent most of our holidays cycling around the world, hiking up mountains, and skiing. This was only our 7th cruise—1 Holland America, 2 Fred Olsen, 2 Azamara, and 1 P&O—all on smaller ships (which are becoming less common). We enjoy calm, relaxing days, early nights, good food, sunshine, a jacuzzi, and a home-like feel, all of which we've experienced on all our cruises, but the Regent one in November 24 was by far the best. The cabin/suite was luxurious, some might say a bit old-fashioned compared to newer ships, but I thought it was elegant and timeless. The bathroom had marble and wood, no fake materials in sight—though not exactly my style, it was still beautiful. The mattress was incredibly deep and comfy, just like the pillows. I drank more champagne than water! You don’t have to stick with the wine that’s served; there’s a wine list to choose from at no extra charge, you just need to ask (they don’t widely promote this). The food was outstanding across all the restaurants. Since we're not big meat eaters, the buffet with all the salads, fruits, and cheeses was more than enough for us. We usually got a window seat, and the staff would bring the food to our table most times. We ordered room service twice, and what an experience that was! We had 2 nights in each port, which made the excursions much more enjoyable. We visited Rome, Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Marseille for the Provence Alps, and Lisbon—all the excursions were fantastic. We select excursions to see historical sites, not to shop in overpriced stores or drink costly coffee, like some people seem to do. Why go to St Tropez when you can explore the Provence Alps or enjoy wine tasting at a vineyard? Everyone has their own preferences, but the most interesting people we met were the ones who, like us, are well-traveled. Most of the staff were eager to help and always went above and beyond. I think the complainers should look at themselves to figure out why they don’t get the best out of people. It really just takes a simple "please," "thank you," and a smile. Treat others how you want to be treated—not in a condescending tone (something I saw a lot). We plan to cruise more often now, and I hope we can afford to do so with RSS again. One thing’s for sure—we’ll stick with the smaller ships, even if they aren’t flashy with tons of entertainment, because neither am I!
